I know we have all heard that making mistakes is how you learn the right way to grow in life and in business. However, I take exception to this in these three arenas because if done, they are destructive from the get-go.

As far as I can determine at this stage of my online career, the following 3 mistakes are what thousands of new marketers are doing without really realizing that it is going to make their businesses suffer.   I bring these up because I have made them and want to pass the knowledge on to you. Reflect on them and hopefully, you will have a path that increases your chances of success.

Mistake #1: Lack of repetition

Repetition is the key to developing high-level skills to succeed. It doesn’t matter what you do in life or business, you must keep doing what you are doing in order to gain mastery.   It takes time to polish your skills and discover the details and nuances of whatever it is that you do. Repetition breeds experience.

An example of what happened to me is facebook advertising. Once you start exploring and designing your first ad campaign, you are going to reach a point where you lose money because of low conversions from the ad or simply targeting the wrong demographics. I was spoiled the first time I ran an ad campaign for an affiliate product and made enough to pull in a profit after ad spend was deducted. Eager to make more, I set up another campaign and let it run. To my horror, I got nothing…zip….nada… and I gave back my profits from the first successful ad.

I can tell you I almost quit because I was so disappointed…but I didn’t. I created another adspend and made some small changes and the results were much better. Over time, this knowledge base becomes critical to you being able to write more impactful ads and develop an instinct to which markets should be targeted.

Word to the wise…most newbies quit way too soon. You have to give yourself time to repeat and make mistakes. Don’t fear failure… it is part of all successes so keep doing what you do and practice to become great.

Mistake 2: Lacking passion

Another huge mistake the noobs make is assuming this online marketing stuff is easy. They get tripped up when they realize just how much work is required to make an online business just function.

Probably the dumbest things I have ever seen online is the ‘make money online’ products promising easy profits with something like an hour’s worth of work a week. They run images of hot cars, huge mansions, a lifestyle on the beach, and a sexy woman that you think would probably put up with your naive butt as you think a flood of money is going to hit your PayPal account.

The reality is the opposite. You will spend an obscene amount of time testing and tweaking, setting up split tests, all the required funnels, pages, ads, upsells, downsells, etc. to get your business off the ground in the first place.

This is where you need passion and if you lack the passion for online marketing, you are going to quit as soon as you run into an obstacle. It may be more capital or training you need but regardless of what it is, you will have to grind to a place where your income coming in is stable and passive.

Ask yourself this question, as I did. Why do you want to do this? List your reasons. If you are all about sipping those margaritas on the beach and not needing to work, I bet you are going to fail.

An easy lifestyle being the reason is not going to fly here. Figure out ‘why’ and you will have the stamina to stay the course.

Mistake #3: Not realizing this is a numbers game

Ever heard of the Pareto principle? I bet you have… This is the principle that says that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts. That means if you promote 10 affiliate products, chances are that only 2 will make more money than all the rest. If you sell 10 e-commerce items, then chances are only 2 attract any buyers.

Sucks huh? It is what is. What I am trying to say is that you have to do enough. You might set up a blog and if you don’t see any results after 6 blog posts, you quit. Don’t throw in the towel so early.

There is a saying among the successful affiliate marketers and it is ‘You need to take massive action and then do more.’ So, if you finally establish a stream of income, scale that stream up so that your earnings multiply.

Once that is stable, establish another income stream…work at it and don’t put all your eggs in one basket. If you do more and diversify more, you will earn more and achieve success. Here are some more articles to build on what I have discussed so far.
